# Dishwasher repair, and the four systems worth checking in order

Most dishwasher calls are one of four systems, and they are worth checking in a fixed order because three of them can imitate the fourth.

## The mechanism, not the marketing

A dishwasher fails as one of four systems — the drain path, spray pressure, the heating circuit or the door and its latch — and three of those imitate the fourth closely enough that guessing is expensive. Checked in order, most calls resolve without a part.

A dishwasher looks like one machine and behaves like four: a drain path, a
spray system, a heating circuit, and a door with a latch and a seal. Almost
every complaint we take is one of those four, and the useful part is that three
of them can produce a symptom that looks exactly like the fourth. That is why
they get checked in a fixed order rather than in the order they are guessed.

## Drainage first, because it is cheapest to rule out

Standing water in the sump is the most common single call, and the list is
short and reliable. The filter, then the drain pump impeller — glass fragments
and fruit stones are the usual finds — then the check valve, then the drain
hose high loop and the air gap at the sink.

In newer kitchens across Nocatee, Durbin Crossing and RiverTown, the high loop
is the culprit far more often than the pump, and the reason is almost always
the same: the garbage disposal was replaced after the dishwasher went in, and
the hose was never re-secured at the height it needs. Nothing on the appliance
has failed. It is a five-minute correction that a great many people pay for
twice, because a pump gets fitted first.

Worth knowing: a machine that will not drain frequently stops mid-cycle and
refuses to resume, because it will not proceed while it can still sense water.
That symptom reads as an electronics fault and is a plumbing one.

## Spray pressure, and why the top rack tells you first

The top rack is furthest from the pump, so it is the first place a pressure
loss shows. “The top is dirty and the bottom is fine” is therefore a pressure
symptom before it is a wash-cycle symptom.

Three things reduce pressure. A spray arm that is not turning freely, usually
because a bearing has worn or a tall item has fouled it. Blocked jets, which
are calibrated apertures and do not have to be blocked much to matter. And a
circulation pump losing performance, which is the least common of the three and
the one most often blamed first.

Loading matters more than anyone likes being told. A sheet pan across the
bottom rack shadows the entire upper spray path, and the machine has no way to
know it is washing the back of a tray.

## The heating circuit and the length of the cycle

A cycle that started saying two hours and finished in three has usually not
failed at all. Most machines extend a cycle when the water is not reaching
temperature on schedule — they wait rather than proceed cold — so a long cycle
is a report about heating, not about timing.

That points at three things in order: the incoming supply temperature, the
heating element and its circuit, and the thermostat or sensor that decides when
temperature has been reached. All three are measurable in one visit, and the
first one costs nothing to check.

Machines that dry by condensation rather than with an element in the tub are a
separate case. They rely on the load and the tub reaching a temperature
differential, so a heating fault in those shows up as wet dishes rather than as
a long cycle, and plastics stay wet first because they hold the least heat.

## The door, the latch and the seal

A door that drops open rather than lowering under control has lost a spring or
a cable, and it is worth fixing promptly for a reason beyond convenience: the
same mechanism holds the door against the seal, and a door that is not being
held properly will eventually leak at the corner it seats worst.

A latch that has to be pushed twice is a latch, not a control fault. A detergent
cup that opens but leaves the tablet sitting in it is usually a spray or
timing issue rather than a dispenser failure — the cup opened, the tablet
simply never got wet enough to go anywhere.

## Access, because it decides the labor

A built-in dishwasher is usually fixed to the countertop above it rather than
to the cabinets beside it, and in a stone-topped kitchen that fixing is not a
thing to discover halfway through. The drain, the supply and the power are all
behind the machine, and on some installations the shut-off valve is behind it
too. It also has to come forward over a finished floor, so what the floor is
and whether it was laid before or after the appliance are real questions.
