What the fee covers ## Six things happen for $129 - Travel to the address, anywhere in the county - Testing the appliance under the conditions it actually fails in, not on a bench - Electrical, water-supply and drain checks at the appliance, because the fault is often outside it - A supply-pressure reading at the appliance connection, which is where a restriction hides - A written estimate listing every part and the labor against it - A plain answer about whether the repair is worth doing The supply reading earns its place on that list. Low pressure at an appliance connection and a failing fill valve produce an identical complaint, and the fixtures in the room can behave perfectly while the appliance behind the cabinetry does not. What it does not cover ## The exclusions, before you ask - Parts. Those are quoted individually on the estimate and never marked up after the fact. - Work that has not been approved. Nothing is fitted before you have said yes to the written figure. - Cabinetry, countertop or plumbing alterations. We will tell you what is needed; a licensed trade does it. - Removing an appliance from a cabinet run where the opening is undersized and the counter has to come off. - Routine maintenance on a published schedule. That is owner maintenance, and telling you the interval costs nothing. Why we will not quote blind ## A price over the phone is a guess with a number on it The same symptom has three or four causes with an order-of-magnitude spread in cost. An ice maker producing small cubes is a failing fill valve, a restricted supply upstream of it, a mould heater at the wrong duty, or a sealed-system problem. The first is an hour. The last is a conversation about whether the appliance has a future. Quoting the cheap one wins the booking and loses the customer. Quoting the expensive one loses the booking. So we quote neither, we come out, and we write the actual figure down after we have measured something. What we will do on the phone is tell you which of those causes is most likely for your ZIP, your appliance and how long it has been happening — and occasionally tell you not to book at all, because what you are describing is a maintenance interval rather than a fault.
