Against the serial number
The component identified against the model and serial, not the model alone, then checked for whether it is still current and what the lead time is.
What it settles. Whether the repair can be finished at all. On older built-ins this is the question that decides everything after it.
On most appliance repairs the diagnosis is the hard part and the component itself is a formality. On built-in and luxury equipment that is frequently reversed: the fault is clear within the hour, and the entire outcome depends on whether the component can still be bought. We ask that question before quoting rather than after, because the answer changes the conversation completely.
Manufacturers make running changes mid-production. A supplier changes, a revision fixes a field problem, a control board gains or loses a connector, and the change takes effect from a point in the production run rather than at a model-year boundary. Two appliances carrying the same model designation, bought eighteen months apart, can therefore take two different components.
That is why we ask for the serial number as well as the model, and why we read it off the rating plate ourselves rather than working from what is written on the paperwork in the drawer. The rating plate is usually behind the door, along a side wall of the cavity, under the toe-kick or behind the grille, depending on the appliance. Photographing it before a visit genuinely speeds things up.
Ordering the right component on the first attempt is worth more than ordering one quickly. A wrong part is not merely a delay; it is a second appointment, a return, and on some components a restocking charge that nobody enjoys discussing.
We fit genuine OEM components, bought through authorized distribution. That is a statement about where the parts come from and nothing more — no manufacturer has certified, authorized, endorsed or trained this company, and we would not imply otherwise to sell a part.
The reason we hold that line on built-in equipment specifically is tolerance. An integrated appliance has to sit flush in joinery, seal against a gasket line that was set at installation, and align with a door panel someone else made. A pattern component that is dimensionally close is not the same as one that is right, and the difference shows up as a door that will not pull itself flush or a seal that ices at one corner.
Where a customer supplies their own component, we will fit it if it is the correct one. The labor still carries its warranty; the part carries whatever its seller offered, which on marketplace listings is frequently nothing.
Four things move a lead time, and it is useful to know which one you are waiting on.
How common the component is. Door seals, igniters, fan motors, thermostats and control boards for current models are ordinarily stocked somewhere in distribution. Cavity liners, specific wiring harnesses and cosmetic panels frequently are not.
How old the appliance is. Support for a discontinued model tapers rather than stopping — some components stay available long after the machine is out of production, and others go first. There is rarely a clean announcement, which is why availability is checked case by case rather than assumed from the age.
Whether the component is serial-specific. A part that splits into two revisions is stocked as two variants, and the one you need may be the thinner of the two lines.
Where it ships from. A component sitting in a regional distribution centre is a different proposition from one that has to be shipped in.
We quote the lead time we are actually given, and we tell you if it moves. An optimistic date is a worse outcome than a realistic one, because the household plans around it.
Sometimes it has, and the honest response is to say so rather than quote a repair we cannot finish. What happens then depends on the appliance.
On cooking equipment there is often still a serviceable path: burner components, igniters, elements, thermostats and door hardware on professional ranges were designed as serviceable items rather than sealed modules, and they frequently outlast the model in availability terms.
On refrigeration the question is usually the control board or the sealed system, and those are the two that end conversations. We hold EPA Section 608 certification and we open a sealed system when the diagnosis genuinely points there — but on an appliance whose board is no longer made, an intact sealed system does not save it.
The arithmetic on a built-in is not the arithmetic on a freestanding machine, and it is not sentiment either.
Add the repair cost to the risk of the next failure, and set that against the replacement cost plus whatever the opening demands — because a built-in with no current equivalent in its dimensions takes joinery with it, and sometimes a countertop. That second figure is frequently several times the first, and it is the reason repairing an older built-in is so often the cheaper answer even when the repair itself looks expensive.
The cases where we say replace are usually one of three. The part has gone and there is no alternative. The machine has several independent faults of different ages, which means it is failing rather than broken. Or the repair approaches the replacement figure on an appliance that will drop straight into the opening with no cabinetry work at all. We would rather say that plainly than sell a repair we do not believe in.
